1. DO keep up with your coursework. Professors may not quiz you daily on reading assignments, but more likely than not they will test you on the material by the end of the semester. Keep up to date with your assignments and do not leave things til the last minute. You will regret it greatly if you do.
2. DO NOT leave your laptop unattended in the library - even if only for a second. Theft can happen anywhere. I cannot tell you how many times I've heard a classmate frantic that their new Macbook Pro was snatched up during finals week when all of their papers were due. Trust me, you do not want to re-write that sixty-three page thesis paper.
3. DO show up to class. You won't gain anything out of something you never experience. College courses are very expensive and whether you're responsible for it or not, someone is paying for it.
4. DO NOT forget your family. During college it can be very easy to become totally consumed with your life on campus. You will be going to class (hopefully), attending sporting events, socializing, and so much more. Do a yourself a favor and call Mom and Dad once in a while. This tip is especially important for first-year students; your parents worry - let them know that you're still breathing.
5. DO try new things. Being on campus gives you a variety of opportunities to become involved and explore new interests. Make the most of your time and leave the TV for another day. Join the tennis team, gaming club, Model United Nations...whatever catches your eye. Most likely you will make new friends and have a great time.
6. DO NOT lock yourself out of your dorm room. While there may not necessarily be harsh penalties for this , it can be an extremely inconvenient situation for you. You will have to track down your RA or roommate to get back in and who knows where they will be when you need them?
7. DO eat healthy. While eating pizza everyday might seem appealing, understand that the dining hall does have other options. Take advantage of the salad bar and other nutritious choices. Don't become a victim of the Freshman 15...or 20!
8. DO NOT be just a number on the roster. Professors, beyond their extensive vocabulary and knowledge, are just about the coolest people you will ever meet. Take the time to introduce yourself to them and form connections. Brownie points are guaranteed.
9. DO visit the library. Often times it will be distracting to try and do homework in your room. In fact, between your roommate, XBOX, and massive DVD collection, it will be near-impossible to be productive. The library isn't just for nerds anymore.
10. DO NOT party all the time. Of course you can once in awhile, but realize that its easy to get caught up in that lifestyle. Staying out late every night will do serious damage to your sleep schedule and body. Be responsible and know your limits.
11. DO stick to your beliefs and morals. Often times you can fall victim to peer pressure with trying alcohol, drugs, or other things. Only do what you are comfortable with and remember who you are. You will make some mistakes and regret things in life, but take control when you can and do your best to make the right choices.
12. DO have fun. College doesn't last forever - even though some people try. Make the most out of your time and keep a smile on your face.
